Important change to the use of over-the-counter (OTC) products in our school health offices:
Based on updated guidance from the New York State Education Department and our Medical Director, school nurses can no longer provide certain OTC products to students without specific authorization. These products include items such as petroleum jelly, antibiotic ointment, antiseptics, alcohol prep pads, contact lens solution, and unscented lotion.
If you would like your child to have access to these products at school, a Treatment Authorization Form must be completed and signed by both a healthcare provider and a parent/guardian. A complete list of covered products is available on the attached form.
Please note:
- This requirement is separate from the Medication Authorization Form used for oral medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
- Students who already have approved medication orders for oral medications are not affected by this change.
- Emergency medications, including Benadryl, EpiPens, and Narcan, will continue to be available when needed.
